With Mr. David as our teacher, Northview has produced numerous State JCL officers and a national president. Being one of the larger
delegations in our state, Northview dominates in the acamdemic, athletic and artistic parts of the State Convention Every year. The Junior
Classical League offers a variety of examinations and both state level and national level conventions each year. Just last week, 20 of
Northview students and Mr. David flew to UC Davis in California for the week long convention. The JCL could not fit every activity in their
7-dayschedule. Students rushed from one event to the next; from academic test session one to the ultimate frisbee match; from the
Certamen rounds (quiz bowl games) to the semiformal dance. As hectic as it might sound, students find time to try everything they wish at
the conventions. Our local Latin program teaches not only the grammar and the use of the Latin language, but a culture which is at the root
of any major society today. Mr. David, our teahcer, teaches with a burning passion to imbue the same desire to learn onto his students.
The Northview Latin program has introduced me to my best friends; through the JCL conventions, I have gotten to know many friends
from all over the nation. At Northview, Latin is not just a foreign language class, but it is a fully loaded program through which one can find
this hidden passion. I have taken Latin I, II and AP Latin Literature, and never in the three years of my high school life have I ever
regretted that decision to take Latin. Unlike the other classes, Latin does not leave one's mind as soon as the 3:40 bell rings. Everyday I
u
nderstand a bit more about the world thanks to Latin. It is this enlightenment which I hope to share with you. Please consider being a
part of the Northview Latin Club, and I will assure you that it will be a worthwhile experience.
-Tony Lee, Northview JCL President/Georgia JCL Webmaster
I originally enrolled in Latin because my older brother took the class and I thought the knowledge would improve my SAT scores. Of
ourse Latin has expanded my vocabulary and looks wonderful on my resume for college but the environment surrounding Latin class is
ruthfully the most rewarding aspect. I view Latin as superior compared to some of the other foreign language classes offered in school
because not only do students learn about grammar and vocab as expected, but also the history, mythology, literature, and culture of the
Romans whose influence trickles down into modern-day life. As the foundation of numerous languages still spoken around the world
today, Latin is anything but dead and provides a deeper insight for English grammar as well as for the five Romance languages. From
personal experience, Latin aided immensely in my understanding of Spanish when I traveled to Guatemala last year as well as French and
Italian when I traveled to Europe this summer. Above all Latin is enjoyable with a great sense of community, I may not be the student
decorated with the most awards, but I have made some lasting friendships in the classroom as well as traveling to three state conventions
and two national conventions (Ohio in 2008 and California in 2009). In addition to academics, I have learned responsibility, hard work,
and leadership by becoming involved in Latin Club; and have enjoyed Mr. David as a teacher who truly invests in his students instead of
just viewing them as a name at the top of a test paper. I encourage everyone, not just rising 9th graders, to take Latin for all these reasons
and more!
